Well mates and lasses, seems ol' Roman here had to go into the body shop for some repairs......Join DateMar 2004Posts15,569Friday morning, while i'm showering (yes, i went to the gym on thursday, thought i was getting back on track), i felt like i had to drop a deuce. but it became more severe, and turned into this cramping sensation. So i'm out of the shower, and decide to lay down til it passes. my symptoms continue, and my hands and feet become like ice (very unusual), and at the same time, the sweat is pouring off me, dripping. i had half a glass of half/half milk. later, i begin to vomit and i'm thinking wtf? i hadn't really eaten anything. so i go to the emergency room 11am friday.
after a lengthy exam, they tell me they can't find anything wrong with me. But i'm writhing in pain! they decide to send me to modesto where they have a Cat Scan machine (apparently, theirs is broken??)
and of course, in an ambulance
later they find out i have acute appendicitis. they schedule me to go under the knife 1am sat morning. but while i'm waiting, they put someone ahead of me in the Q, which delays my operation until 5am. During this time, my appendix burst. we didn't find this out until after the operation. so what was going to be a simple recovery, now turns into this lengthy recovery, and i just get out today (xmas eve) around 4 or 5.
While at the hospital, i run across a riding buddy a few doors down on the same floor. he had his hip replaced.
Saturday night at 9.5, they give me a cup full of pills to take. But oops! one of those pills was a stimulant called Ritalin. no sleep for me THAT night. the nurse never apologized or took ownership of the mistake. she said to just calm down and try to relax and get some sleep (i unsuccessfully tried vomiting it up). i asked for some vomiting medicine (ipecac), but she said that is not on the list the doctor prescribed (duh!)
This is Kaiser, and they self proclaim to be a five star hospital.
What would you think? Five Star Hospital???

Five star FAILURE. Appendicitis is not difficult to miss. Who was the attending? Some new resident?Sounds like you are on the mend. Too bad it ruptured before you received the care needed. Glad you're recovering. Hopefully the rest of your Christmas will be much better TR.
Damn TR, sorry to hear that. I'm glad you are home for the holiday atleast. How are you feeling now?
Doesnt sound like a 5 star unless you left out some sponge bath stories.

Christ I think I may have been able to call that one. WTF. Sorry to hear all this TR. Hope you're feeling better and next year is looking up for you!Merry Xmas.
Sounds unpleasant, sorry to hear about the ritilan. Look on the bright side, at least you were in the hospital when it burst and not on the job somewhere in the middle east in a compound.Join DateJun 2012LocationUbiquitousPosts10,271

Pegged it as soon as he mentioned the symptoms. Heck, half the guys on here could make a better diagnosis.
that nurse would have got a damn earfull if she didntJoin DateMay 2010LocationBack in AfghanistanPosts21,896
apologize...she needs wrote up for that, you just dont mess medicine up. really sounds like a poorly ran facility imo, but all in all you are alright and I wish you a speedy recovery buddy.
the good news is that it happened here, not there.Join DateFeb 2012Posts6,332and fawk! appendicitis is surprisingly painful. i wouldn't wish this on any of you. i was actually lying on my stomach in the emergency room trying to find a position that would take the edge of the pain off. no worries, the ER was empty. =)
and now i'm beginning to think last may when i lost all the weight, it wasn't an intestinal blockage, it was the first appendicitis attack. miraculously, i recovered. (usually it doesn't "get better"). i say this because the symptoms were surprisingly similar. and when i had my blood panels taken a month later, my WBC count was high. Now i'm wondering if all this time, my bad health was/is attributable to the first bout? i've had so many problems with my health and lost so much weight, i'm hoping this is the culprit and in 8 weeks, i'll be able to return to normal, gain some weight, and get back to about a gym ready 250lbs.
i was wondering all these months why i can eat like a horse, yet gain no weight. strange strange strange
Get well soon.Join DateMay 2010LocationBack in AfghanistanPosts21,896Curious, do you have any idea what was that other case that they slot in before you?

no idea. they didn't think my apendicitis was that serious, so they did mention to me before that if something serious comes in, they may have to give them my slot.So how serious is a ruptured appendix?
Glad your ok TR. won't be long now. Ease back in.Join DateFeb 2012Posts6,332

Ruptured appendix will eventually go into shock from internal bleeding. If the leak is not walled off quickly, you will get septicaemia as well. But there are cases of very small leaks that got walled of very quickly and they may not seem too sick.

You'll probably be billed extra for the Ritilan.Join DateFeb 2012Posts6,332

i haven't done the research yet. i always thought a burst appendix was pretty serious. If the appendix is a typical one (freely dangling), then the typical complications will arise. Septicaemia and shock. If the appendix is in an unusual position like behind the bowel or even behind the abdominal cavity, then the complications could be very limited due to its position.
Glad you're well now. Did you ask the hospital administrators for some sort of compensation? Like sponge baths from the hottest nurses?

^^^Don't count on it LMAO!! ^^^Join DateJan 2009Posts1,125I was just thinking about what you posted concerning your bad health last spring..... my brother had his burst while on the way to the doctors office a few years ago..... anyways he made claims of feeling poorly for the previous year. Interesting, oh well, rest up and recover, you'll be a new man.
Glad to hear your are doing better. Someone should be disciplined for the medication error. Especially cause Ritalin is a controlled drug.Join DateMay 2010LocationBack in AfghanistanPosts21,896

Especially cause Ritalin is a controlled drug.yeah, maybe. i have so much shit to do now before i go back, that one is a low priority. 4 unanticipated nights in the hospital. i usually put holiday stuff off til the last minute, and now no chance to get anyone anything. so not too happy about that.Join DateDec 2012LocationThe MatrixPosts3,492i've been taking ritalin for 45 years. no risk of sickness or death from it. just no sleep.
this was one interesting vacation to say the least....
